As Chiang Mai is the most important economic center in the North, the volume of financial business is increasing quickly and the size of the business is greater than in surrounding provinces. As of December 2004 there were 136 bank branches, the highest number in the North.
Bank deposits in commercial banks increased 4.9% on the previous year and stood at 90,233 million Baht in 2004. Commercial bank lending increased 2.3% year on year, and outstanding loans stood at 71,180 million Baht in 2004. The proportion of loans to deposits is 78.9%.
