Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Has Passed Away (Jan 2nd 2008)
Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, the elder sister of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, passed away at the age of 84 on the early morning of Wednesday, 2 January 2008.
The Bureau of the Royal Household announced that Her Royal Highness was admitted to Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok for abdominal cancer treatment on 15 June 2007. Although the team of royal physicians took care of her closely, Her Royal Highness’ condition gradually declined, and then she passed away at 2:54 a.m. on 2 January 2008.
His Majesty the King ordered the Bureau of the Royal Household to organize memorial rites with the highest honor accorded to Her Royal Highness in accordance with the royal tradition. The body of Her Royal Highness is lying in state at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall in the Grand Palace compound. The Royal Court will be mourning for 100 days as of the day of her passing away.
His Majesty the King has granted permission for the general public to take part in the bathing rite in front of the portrait of Her Royal Highness at Sahathai Samakhom Hall within the Grand Palace from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on January 2. Also at 5:00 p.m. on January 2, Their Majesties the King and Queen and members of the Royal Family proceeded to the Grand Palace to perform the bathing rite for the Princess.
According to an announcement by the Government, all government offices and Thai embassies overseas will fly the Thai national flag at half mast for 15 days. Government officials and state enterprise employees have been told to wear black in mourning for 15 days.
All 90 Thai embassies and consulates are placing a condolence book for leaders and people of various countries, as well as Thai expatriates, to sign in memory of the Princess.
The Cabinet, during its meeting on January 2, acknowledged the order issued by the Prime Minister's Office, appointing the National Commission on the Royal Cremation Ceremony for the Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra. The National Commission, chaired by the Prime Minister, is responsible for organizing the royal cremation ceremony in accordance with the royal tradition and the intention of the Government.
